The Challenge
When designing its new stadium, Major League Soccer (MLS) St. Louis CITY SC set out to redefine the fan experience with a technology-forward approach. Faced with the challenge of meeting rising fan expectations, the team also aimed to eliminate common gameday frustrations, such as long concession lines and slow entry, and create a seamless, immersive fan journey from the first to final whistle. Digital signage was key to achieving this vision. The team sought a partner that could design and integrate display solutions that kept fans engaged, removed bottlenecks and contributed to an unforgettable gameday experience. Â
The Solution
At St. Louis CITY SC’s 32-acre stadium district — the largest urban professional sports campus in the U.S. — Samsung was selected for its best-in-class technology. From the early design stages, Samsung worked closely with the team to develop a considered, tech-driven strategy that integrated more than 200 state-of-the-art LED displays throughout the campus. These high-definition displays included 360-degree ribbon boards, field-level videoboards, overhead displays, and supersized LED video walls in premium areas and crucial wayfinding across the entire stadium campus. About St. Louis CITY SC
St. Louis CITY SC, one of the few majority female-led ownership groups in all of professional sports, is Major League Soccer’s 28th team and plays at Energizer Park, an STLMade 22,500-seat world-class soccer-specific stadium. Energizer Park is part of a new world-class stadium district, which includes a practice facility, team store and team headquarters all within the same 30+ acre urban campus in downtown St. Louis to help further the region’s continued growth and revitalization. St. Louis CITY SC’s vision is to be an exceptional club and neighbor that brings people together through the power of sports.
The Challenge
Bringing a new spirit to St. Louis through digital signage
When St. Louis CITY SC broke ground on its home stadium in 2019, the owners sought to bring something different to the league. The ambition was to build a unique venue that would leverage state-of-the-art technology and create one of the most seamless and enjoyable gameday experiences in professional sports.
With its location in Downtown St. Louis, the 22,500-seat Energizer Park would be the heart of a 32-acre stadium district — the largest urban professional sports campus in the U.S.
The urban build defied traditional stadium planning from the outset and focused on pushing the envelope of design and engineering. Above all, the ownership group was committed to the community of Downtown St. Louis, making every effort to ensure the stadium would elevate fan loyalty, give its supporter groups a passion-fueled gameday and drive local support.
St. Louis CITY SC identified the need for an immersive experience for fans from the moment they arrive to when they leave the stadium. That way, they feel truly engaged in every part of the gameday action, never missing a beat.
For a flawless visit that would have fans coming back for more, St. Louis CITY SC examined how other venues in the league operated and recognized the challenge of eliminating the typical stadium pinch points, such as bottlenecks at entry and congestion in concession queues.
“The issue we were dealing with in soccer was the supply-demand challenges of each game. You have a pregame rush where everybody wants a bite to eat or a beverage and there’s another rush for 15 minutes at halftime,” explained Matt Sebek, chief experience officer at St. Louis CITY SC. “Most teams are trying to pull all the revenue from a 15-minute halftime and there’s just not enough ways to do that. Fans line up at a concession or retail stores, but the back half leaves because they’re frustrated. The result is an unhappy fan and a lost revenue opportunity.”
The key to solving this challenge was integrating innovative technology from the planning stages of the project, making sure it was at the fore of the build. The mission was clear — work with a technology partner who could deliver LED display solutions that streamline stadium operation and keep fans at fever pitch.

The Solution
A best-in-class display provider
With the objective of a tech-forward stadium laid out, St. Louis CITY SC needed to execute on the vision. The owners made sure technology was factored into planning from the start, which informed decisions on the display solutions that could make the biggest impact. The team also looked at future tech trends to avoid a costly upgrade down the line.
“It was very unique to have those conversations so early with designers and builders. The owners didn’t want to make major build decisions without considering what the fan experience could be or what technology would be chosen,” said Sebek.
The ambitious Energizer Park sports campus project involved not just a stadium, but a team headquarters, team store and practice facility all connected within a single ecosystem. To achieve that, the team needed a partner who could provide a holistic display technology package for the highest-quality experience on game days and beyond.
“Partners had to understand our ‘Connected City’ vision. So, for us, working with the best was really important,” emphasized Sebek.
Samsung was selected as the display provider, entering the project in the design phase and working with St. Louis CITY SC to the present day. Sebek described the dynamic as a “consultative relationship,” where both parties collaborated to identify objectives. In this capacity, Samsung provided multiple digital signage options for the stadium and district enhancements.

“We chose Samsung because of its ability to scale with us as the district grows,” said Sebek. “Samsung was undoubtedly best-in-class on the display side. The spectrum of solutions that Samsung could provide, such as its flexibility to pivot between menu boards and 1.5mm pixel pitch displays when we needed them — there was just nobody else in the business that could do that.”
Across Energizer Stadium, more than 200 high-definition Samsung LED displays were strategically placed and installed. This included 360-degree ribbon boards circling the field, as well as two supersized video boards with brilliant and crystal-clear visuals in the north and south goal zones.
“The Samsung displays allow the venue to be multifunctional and available 365 days a year,” said Tana Ashton, director of live events sports and entertainment at Samsung Electronics America. “From corporate branding events to private events and concerts, they can flip these displays in an instant and turn the stadium into a completely different environment.”
Samsung also contributed to an initiative to enhance the premium experience at the stadium’s largest indoor space, the Ultra Club, by installing two 20-foot LED video walls. The captivating video walls, alongside incredible views of the pitch and downtown skyline, have made the Ultra Club one of the most sought-after spaces in the stadium on game day, as well as for watch parties and private events. Furthermore, in the most premium suite, the Pitch Club, a striking 22-foot video wall entertains before, during and after the game.
Digital signage displaying a live game feed has also been strategically placed throughout the district, including in the venue’s concourses. The same goes for wayfinding signage with rotating graphics and stadium maps. All the high-definition displays with crystal-clear visuals are connected by a single architecture that enables moments of exclusivity for partners and ensures fans don’t miss a minute of the action from all areas of the venue.
“From the menu boards when you’re in line ordering food and wayfinding signage that guides you into the stadium to the field-level ribbon boards and massive LEDs showing instant replays, Samsung ensures you’re always connected to the action,” Ashton said.

The Results
Award-winning fan entertainment experience
St. Louis CITY SC opened the doors of its brand-new stadium in 2023. All the planning, preparation and boundary-pushing technology combined to deliver a gameday experience that resonated across the league and throughout Downtown.
Samsung and St. Louis CITY SC’s impressive partnership created a unique stadium that boasts 99% digital signage, with each screen serving a specific purpose as originally envisioned.
“Digital signage allows us to do a wide magnitude of operations — from changing out sponsorship signage to internal messaging,” explained David Vedder, director of live experience for St. Louis CITY SC.
Vedder has the enviable role of pushing the technology to its limits, experimenting creatively with content to use signage outside the normal realm that one-ups what other teams are doing. “The goal is to create one memorable experience for a fan to lean on and come back to,” he stated.
Rather than using typical stadium lighting for dramatic effect, Vedder’s team turn off the floodlights and turn on bright, high-contrast video boards with colorful LED for a synchronized visual light show.
Employing what Vedder calls the “party button” feature, it signals to the fans that the pregame show is about to begin. Mixing music through the stadium’s audio system with creative visuals on the video boards and LED ribbon boards, it then leads into the team’s entrance hype video prominently displayed on the main goal end screens and supporting digital signage.
“We envision and use our boards as another member of our team. We know that through the different visuals we can put on them — whether it’s gameplay action replays or animated graphics — we can use the displays as part of the atmosphere,” Vedder added.
The team’s pregame experience has become iconic with its usage of video boards and stunning ecosystem of LEDs, resulting in St. Louis CITY SC being named the 2024 MLS Game Presentation Team of the Year.
On the stadium operation side, the investment in connected digital signage venue-wide has also given the team a winning edge. Through valuable insight of other MLS stadiums, Sebek highlighted how the deployment of display technology at Energizer Park is helping keep fans happy and maximizing gameday revenue.
“Instead of having five or six large concession stands that get crowded with long queues, we spread them out. We have 52 different food and beverage experiences, and Samsung displays play a big part through wayfinding, digital menu boards, advertisement and sponsor messages, and mobile pickup signage,” he noted.
The fan experience is further elevated by the large and vivid video walls at special events.
“The displays allow us to have DJ art and motion graphics that move to the music. We show post-game highlights on there, as well. They enable us to run a completely different show after hours. These little, incremental advantages throughout the day just make it better than any experience that fans have been to before,” said Sebek.
For any teams wanting a transformative experience at their stadium, they need to look no further than how St. Louis CITY SC achieved its multifunctional, award-winning venue.
