Firmware updates are critical to ensuring that mobile devices have the latest security features in place, but they also have the potential to be disruptive to an enterprise if not managed properly.

Samsung’s Enterprise Firmware Over-The-Air (E-FOTA) service was introduced to give enterprise mobile managers control over when firmware updates are pushed out to devices, and who receives them. E-FOTA can now be accessed through many of the leading EMM solutions, including MobileIron.

I spoke with Ojas Rege, chief marketing and strategy officer for MobileIron, at this year’s Gartner Symposium in Orlando, Florida, about how MobileIron and Samsung worked together on integrating E-FOTA.

“Firmware updates are essential for security,” said Rege. “If there are no firmware updates or they’re not happening at the right time, there could be security threats that the IT manager has no ability to handle. Companies need a structured method to get firmware updates on a device.”
