The Challenge

The Chargers have officially opened The Bolt – their new state-of-the-art training facility and headquarters in El Segundo, California.

The Bolt, which took two years to build, is the perfect location for the team now officially located in the heart of Los Angeles’ South Bay. The Chargers wanted the facility to enhance and excel player development with smart design and technology that would remain cutting-edge for years to come. As a new project with a blank canvas, the team’s commitment to advanced technology would mean embedding transformative displays into the very DNA of the building.

The Solution

"The displays enhance our communication with staff and players throughout the facility daily.”

About the Los Angeles Chargers

Now in their 65th season in Southern California, the Chargers continue to stretch the imagination and put on the most exciting show in football. But don’t let the idyllic West Coast setting and iconic powder blue uniforms – widely regarded as the NFL’s best – fool you. Behind the dramatic games, unforgettable highlights, beloved players and groundbreaking performances lies an uncompromising drive for success; one rooted in toughness, resilience and good old-fashioned hard work.

Established in Los Angeles in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League, the team played in San Diego from 1961 to 2016 and advanced to five of the first six AFL Championship games, capturing the 1963 title. Joining the National Football League when the two leagues merged in 1970, the Chargers have since claimed an additional 10 division titles and appeared in Super Bowl XXIX. Owned by the Spanos family since 1984, the Chargers returned to Los Angeles in 2017, opened their multi-billion-dollar SoFi Stadium home in 2020, will move into their new quarter-billion-dollar El Segundo training facility in the heart of Los Angeles’ South Bay in 2024 and continue to redefine what an NFL franchise looks like in the 21st century.

The Challenge

Protecting home advantage

In 2020, the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers took the field at their game-changing new home, SoFi Stadium — the world’s most technologically advanced sports and entertainment venue. To match this marvel of design and technology integration, the Chargers aimed to build The Bolt, a state-of-the-art training facility and headquarters that would provide a world-class environment for its players, coaches, staff and fans.

Finding the prime location for the team was at the forefront of their mind and the initial challenge the team endured when starting this project. The search for the perfect plot began over seven years ago, involving an extensive process of evaluating more than 35 sites. The final 14-acre location was identified in El Segundo, where they broke ground in 2022.

Working with renowned venue designers, the organization had a wish list for The Bolt that included spaces for practice, rehabilitation, coaching, business operations, and player accommodations. The criteria included three natural grass fields, a unique feature that added complexity to the project.

Jon Lucas, Chargers Director of Facilities and Construction, knew one of the main focuses of the building was ensuring the highest technological advancements be weaved into the buildings DNA.

“One of our main goals for the building was the ability to house and showcase the most technologically advanced systems. We wanted to be at the forefront and utilize technology in a way that goes beyond the everyday. With two years of construction, each technological feature needed to remain relevant long after we opened,” said Lucas.

Incorporating advanced display solutions throughout the building was a crucial part of the plan to ensure the Chargers’ new facility would not fall behind technologically. The challenge with the ambitious ground-up design for The Bolt was that there was no blueprint. The team would require a wealth of displays ranging in size, shape and specification to suit wide applications — from team meeting and conference rooms to locker rooms and outdoor practice fields — and they would all have to be installed amidst a fast and furious building schedule.

“It’s easy to have an idea, the challenge is bringing that to life. There was a lot of coordination between us, the Chargers, and Samsung from the beginning be it with the design team, installers, various contractors and engineers. Everyone had to work hand-in-hand to install these solutions,” explained Lucas.

“The Bolt needed to feel like a home. It’s a place where our players, coaches and staff spend most of their time – especially in season. Knowing that, we had to meet a lot of requirements from both the business and football side and therefore it was pertinent that our displays were at the forefront of every decision.”

To achieve this goal, the Chargers were tasked with finding a dynamic technology partner who would provide seamless, end-to-end support for the project and be able to react to any unexpected changes.

“Decisions and processes shift and change quickly during construction so we were definitely looking for a partner that was flexible as well as one that would provide the most cutting-edge products that would captivate everyone as they entered different spaces within the building,” stated Lucas.

The Solution

A Bolt for the blues

Samsung was the top name on the Chargers’ lineup as a technology partner, having designed and delivered the display solutions for many innovative buildings across the sports industry, including the awe-inspiring centerpiece display that hangs above their home field at SoFi Stadium, giving fans a 360-degree view (the world’s largest screen in sports).

“From the very beginning, Samsung proved innovation was important – and so it was to us. With Samsung having the capability to manufacture, provide and install, it was the perfect marriage,” said Lucas. “Samsung worked closely with us on last-minute changes and adjust without causing delays which gave us comfort in knowing the project was just as important to them as it was to us.”

The Chargers and Samsung shared a vision of pushing technological boundaries. They collaborated closely on display solutions for The Bolt, designing an ecosystem of screens integrated into the facility’s fabric. Each space within the sprawling three-floor complex has been thoughtfully optimized using display technology to enhance experience and interaction. From the moment a visitor enters, the impact is immediate.

In the lobby, a unique, high-resolution, 1,800-square-foot ISC LED display with 2,000-nit brightness serves as a striking centerpiece, showcasing dynamic content and creating an impactful first impression for visitors. “We envisioned the statement piece being the large video wall in the lobby,” said Lucas. “It’s the first things visitors see and can display any content needed for that area such as welcoming partners, VIPs, or highlighting game recaps.”

The ground floor houses an expansive locker room, equipment room, training space, weight room, hydrotherapy room, team lounge and direct access to the practice fields. Each room features Samsung 4K Smart Signage in sizes ranging from 43 to 85 inches, which are utilized for everything from informational nutrition and strength to performance displays.

The press conference room features two big, bright displays: one using Samsung’s LCD Video Wall as a main backdrop behind the speaker and a secondary screen off to the side. This video array allows the Chargers to push content during press conferences, such as plays or other relevant footage, providing a dynamic and engaging experience.

Coaches and business staff have displays in their offices as well. Meeting rooms have various sizes of Samsung high-definition screens, the largest being a 98-inch screen in the two-story team meeting room. The 4K screens allow coaches and players to review film and analyze plays in pin-sharp detail to enhance training and preparation.

On the outside of the building, adjacent to the practice fields, are XRB outdoor ribbon boards, which are each over 450 square feet and provide the Chargers with a valuable tool to enhance practice session effectiveness. The 5,000-nit brightness ribbon boards, visible in the Californian sun, can simulate a stadium atmosphere, display scores, countdowns, and phases, and showcase content during training camp, including partners’ names — a flexibility that helps enhance both business operations and fan engagement.

“We had big expectations – we wanted a three-story LED wall in the lobby, ribbon boards outside facing the field that would be seen in the sunlight and a large backdrop in our media center. There are not manufacturers out there that could have done what Samsung did,” Lucas reflected.

The Technology

XRB outdoor ribbon boards

The XRB Series features 5,000 nit brightness, ensuring clear and crisp visuals even in direct sunlight. The compact design can be installed quickly and easily, and is available in a range of sizes and pixel pitches.

ISC direct view LED

Samsung’s ISC Series captivates viewers with stunning LED visuals. Its 3,840Hz refresh rate guarantees smooth visuals, and improved energy efficiency reduces the need for additional power.

The Results

Leading the charge for sports facility innovation

The fruition of a shared commitment to innovation and excellence between the Chargers and Samsung is evident at The Bolt, a training facility like no other.

Setting the bar for future builds across all sports, the project seamlessly blends advanced display technology with day-to-day operations to supercharge organizational efficiency and communication for both players and staff.

The clear, vibrant visuals of Samsung’s dynamic displays are essential for effective communication. As Lucas highlighted, the screens controlled by an IPTV system throughout the facility can help keep the whole organization connected.

“The IPTV system allows us to push content across all screens within the building be it for dining room menus, events or highlight videos. We’re able to push out important all at once, ensuring everyone sees the same information in a timely manner,” said Lucas.

Additionally, the team can use the displays for business-specific purposes, such as posting player meeting schedules, game planning and other communication needs. Similarly, staff can use them to share important meeting details, tasks or event countdowns.

“The possibilities are endless,” said Lucas. “The displays enhance our communication with staff and players throughout the facility daily.”

The journey has been long, but the result has been worth the wait. The Chargers and Samsung teams involved in this meticulously designed project have worked harmoniously and in synchronicity, a shining example of how the right partners can help build the dream.

“We wanted to go above and beyond. Innovation was at the forefront of our minds when doing this project because technology is the future. We knew Samsung was more than capable of it and it’s been efficient, collaborative and exciting every step of the way.”
