Have wow factor, will travel: Samsung’s new portable LED display

We live in a world on the go. Just look at the booming pop-up economy. Shops, museums, workspaces, and cafes appear out of nowhere, and disappear just as quickly. As consumers lean more toward experiences over things, the here-today-gone-tomorrow trend is on the rise. In a word, temporary is here to stay, and the quality of experiences must be high to deserve the attention over other good possibilities.

If that’s the case, the Ascent, Samsung’s new portable LED display is arriving at just the right time. Designed to deliver the kind of wow factor usually reserved for traditional fixed installations in a portable and convenient format, it’s the perfect HD visual solution for a world that increasingly values the thrill of transience over the security of permanence.

Indoor vs outdoor LED displays: Expand your expertise

A portable motion LED display

The Ascent offers the latest in Samsung LED technology in an easy-set-up, easy-take down-package that rolls into place and requires no assembly. The Full HD 1080p indoor display features a 130″ diagonal screen and 1.5-mm pixel pitch. It takes about three minutes to set up and three to break down. Once you’ve got it set up, the display moves up and down (that’s the “motion” part in Samsung’s descriptor above) so you can give your audience the best vantage point, between six and over nine feet in height.

“We see this being used in any markets where you want a beautiful, captivating display, but not as a permanent fixture,” says Brent Williamson, a product marketing manager at Prismview, a Samsung company, and the organization behind Ascent. “That could be conferences, shows, hospitality: basically anywhere there’s an event being held or digital content to share, which can be almost anywhere these days. The Ascent can be set up quickly, taken down quickly, and adds value and wow factor to any presentation or temporary display.”

The Ascent can be shipped any number of different ways, including air freight, from anywhere in the world to anywhere in the world. There’s no assembly required, and it fits through most standard-sized doors.

Transcending the limits of projection

Like most great innovations, the idea for the Ascent was born out of a desire to share something beautiful, but also overcome challenges created by older technology: such as projection.

“Our leadership had the vision to offer gorgeous, bright LED technology in areas that were typically done with projection, because of the portability and relatively low setup time,” says Williamson. “But using a projector can come with a whole host of problems. For one, there can be nothing in the beam path between the projector and the reflecting screen. Someone standing up and trying to point something out on the screen ends up interfering with the very thing they are trying to point out. Plus they can’t look out at the crowd, because the bright light of the projector is in their eyes.”

With LED there is no keystone correction or overshooting and losing the image if the projector just doesn’t quite line up with the screen.

Perhaps worst of all, projections don’t look good in a brightly lit room. They need a darker environment to display properly. “I was recently at a conference where there were lots of projection companies,” says Williamson. “All their booths were dimly lit. They have to keep the lights low, otherwise their image quality suffers. Samsung’s booth, populated with top quality LED displays, was well lit from overhead and provided an inviting, pleasant atmosphere, a major contrast and a win for LED as the choice for the premium presentation experience.”

Washed out images, screen alignment, blinding the presenter, shadowing the image — these should all be problems of the past and people are expecting the next level when it comes to content sharing. Projection display has been so common because of the portability that better technology for large displays such as LED just can’t provide, until now.

A hi-def, low-stress visual experience anywhere

With the Ascent, you get a beautiful, bright LED display, and with a brightness rating of 800nit can be easily seen in a highly lit or sunlit room, all with the advantage of portability, getting the latest in display technology without having to commit to a permanent fixture mounted on a wall. And moreover, anyone within a 160-degree viewing angle can see what you’re showing on the screen, while you or your presenter can comfortably look out at and engage with the audience (without squinting).

And the convenience is remarkable. “It behaves like a television,” says Williamson. “With two people you roll it into place, plug it in, lower the foot to set it where you want it, roll the case away, and start playing your content through HDMI, USB or even internal memory, all in only a few minutes. It’s extremely easy to use.”

Getting that kind of quality and convenience in a single package is attractive to markets ranging from traditional event planners to eSports fans. “People walk by, see the display, and immediately ask if they can hook up a game console,” Williamson says. “Of course they do! It’s a huge 1080p display and high definition games would look absolutely beautiful, and easily shared with a large crowd.”
