Advancements in mobile and cloud technology are rapidly changing the healthcare industry, as hospitals adopt innovative new solutions to streamline clinical communications and improve the patient experience.
While at HIMSS this year, I spoke with industry experts about what they feel are commonly overlooked steps when implementing new technology in hospitals.
“As healthcare systems are adopting new technologies, one thing that often gets overlooked is how that new technology is going to fit into real-life clinicians’ day-to-day workflow,” said Dr. William O’Connor, chief medical information officer at TigerConnect.
Justin Corbell, VP of sales and business development at Scandit, has found that there is often hesitancy at the administration level, but that the people using the technology adapt well.
“It’s very important to think about the training process — and the support process — around each piece of technology that’s being introduced,” said Ammad Khan, CEO of IrisVision. “Helping people get over that initial hump of learning the technology … often gets in the way.”
Steve Dann, cofounder and executive chairman of Medical Realities, says that hospital employees should stay open-minded and look to the future as new technology is implemented into their facilities. Ultimately, successfully introducing new technologies into a healthcare facility depends on buy-in from the top down and a careful deployment strategy as much as the technology itself.
